Dversepoets prompt for Haibun Monday is offered by Kanzen Sakura, and it’s about a night that was memorable. I’m posting too early as the prompt opens around 3pm EST. Check out dversepoets pub and the wonderful poems that are sure to show up.
Lady Nyo
–
Soft mid-winter night where the moon rides the sky like a beggar’s cup one-fourth filled. The skeleton trees are silhouetted against the horizon as light folds into dark velvet. Even the raucous wood owls are mercifully silent.
I go outside and salute the sky, the moon and now the winking stars with a glass of Hibiki, and see spring trying to take the field. Winter’s hand is still rough on the Earth, but spring, eternal and forever, begs winter shift its ass and give room for rebirth. A delicate Couperin melody floats in the chilly wind, a phantom will o’ wisp, heard only by a settling nature and a shivering me.
This eternal, whirling dance from season to season, never tiring in its efforts, surprises with earliest snowbells and the first shy crocus. The red maple will burst later with carmine pompoms and soon the plums will prove as vital.
The night hovers in all its mystery, with the Cosmos wheeling from Milky Way to universes uncharted. The stars above don’t really twinkle. They appear frozen as only stars in winter can seem.
In the dead of winter, the earth’s gestation is in the air, and life is good.
Scant moon moored in sky
Gathers stars within its bowl
A lighthouse to earth
—
In the Crossfire
Of Christmas, I forget
Reason for season

Lovely haiku. I love the thought of the moon gathering stars in her bowl. And the last, I pray we never forget the reason for the season.

This is gorgeous Jane. The cold seeps from the prose, the notes like icicles connecting the crocus and the Cosmos. The dead calm of icy repose.

Thank you. Toni. I fought that ‘reason for the season’ for decades…now? I can embrace it. Thank you for reading and your comment.

Stunning descriptive prose, Jane. Breathtaking. The end of winter, as well as the beginning, is so replete with promise.

Thank you, Victoria. I love both, about the same. Expectations abounding on both ends of the mule! LOL! The blank canvas of winter when it gets serious allows or pulls out something of creativity. And the joy and expectation of Spring rounds the seasons out. Thank you, Victoria for reading and your lovely comment.

The descriptive prose is so lovely, this is a moment that really feels like a pinnacle of being. A reason d’aitre, the purpose of living. I love the two haiku that really complement the prose perfectly.

Stunning prose that calls all the elements present fully into being…I could feel the chills, hear the wisp like Couperin melody…and taste the Hibiki ( Good choice btw)

What a gorgeous scene you show us here with your exquisite prose, Jane…really beautifully done. I love how you indicate the beginnings of spring in spite of the still quite frozen conditions. There is a strong sense of hope and renewal that we surely need.

I love that opening paragraph, Jane, it is so evocative and made me shiver, and that cheeky line: ‘Winter’s hand is still rough on the Earth, but spring, eternal and forever, begs winter shift its ass and give room for rebirth’. The description of spring flowers is gorgeous – and then I got to the haiku. What an image of the moon!

I think there can be many reasons for the season. At least I hope so.

Thanks, Gayle. Here in the South….the weather is screwed up. It’s 60 today and yesterday or before it wasn’t even 40. I noticed daffs that I planted two weeks ago peeking out of the soil. Go Back! Go Back! I want to scream at them. Winter will show it’s scraping hand soon enough and these bulbs will be sorry for showing their heads! I think we are battered by the past few months, regardless who you voted for….and a strong sense of hope and renewal is exactly what we need. Thank you so much for reading and your lovely comment.

Thank you, charliezero1. Perhaps because we haven’t been hit with a blizzard or a snow storm I can wax soothing about winter. LOL!~ Thank you for reading and your comment.

LOL! I am not a drinker, have never developed a taste for whiskey, (sherry is good…) but this is very new to me (first bottle) and it is lovely. I’m sipping a shot right now. It goes down very smoothly without an afterburn. LOL! Thank you for reading, Paul and your comment.

Thank you, Bjorn. I understand your sense of d’etre…this reason for being…I saw that take shape in the middle part and it always surprises me when these ‘accidental’ things happen in poetry. Sometimes the poem writes itself. Thank you for reading and your insightful comment.

Beautiful mix and complementarity of prose and poetry. The ‘dead’ of winter is never dead, merely repose for what is to come.
